The course is designed for students who want to learn the principles involved in small business management.
There are no prerequisites for the course, but credit transfers and recognition of current competence are available, and successful completion of the course will give credits to the NZIM Diploma in Management and NZ Diploma in Business.
The Certificate in Small Business Management draws on some of the papers from the Certificate in Management and supplements these with a core of specific small business papers.
Course descriptionThis certificate aims to apply practical and realistic skills for successful small business management in problem areas such as: finding and keeping a market niche; maintaining cash flow and profitability; identifying and controlling costs; employing highly motivated staff; and keeping the business at the right size.
The course consists of eight papers, four core papers and four optional papers in associated management areas and chosen from the papers from the NZIM Certificate in Management.
Students wishing to complete both Cert Mgt and CSBM must pass 12 papers including the core papers from both qualifications.
Entry to the courseThere are no prerequisites. It is designed for people who work or wish to work in small business enterprises, and is ideal for people who are self-employed. Students will be able to make immediate application of the skills and knowledge obtained on the course.
Previous study, qualifications or work experience may entitle students to exemptions from one or more papers. Applications should be made on the exemption form available on this website or from NZIM National Office.

Students who have completed the eight papers of the NZIM Certificate in Small Business Management can apply for credit for paper 435 Fundamentals of Small Business and for an additional unspecified paper credit transfer at level 4 towards the NZIM Diploma in Management and New Zealand Diploma in Business. An unspecified credit transfer reduces the number of papers required for the Diploma, but you cannot substitute another diploma paper for it.
