Moderation processes

All papers in the NZIM Certificate in Management, the Certificate in Small Business Management and the Certificate in Language, Culture and Management need to be moderated by NZIM’s national moderator, Pam Mundell. This moderation should take place the first time you offer the papers, unless you have made special arrangements with Pam.

(In the CLCM, where credit is claimed for the NZ Diploma in Business paper 469 Academic Skills for Business Studies, that paper needs to be moderated by NZQA through the NZ Diploma in Business process.)

The moderation has two stages. Pre-moderation occurs when you are designing your assessment processes, to ensure you are meeting the assessment criteria for the paper. Post-moderation considers the level and consistency of your marking of student work.

Pam moderates the papers against the guidelines of each paper’s moderation checklist , which you can download from the provider log-in area. The moderation checklist provides you with a good guide for designing your assessments. The website also gives examples of assessments for most papers.

For pre-moderation, send your drafts and marking schedules to Pam, so that she may comment on them before you commit yourselves to them.

And for post-moderation, send three marked student assessments, together with the same material you sent for pre-moderation, so that she can check on the level and consistency of your standards.

Each successfully pre- and post-moderated assessment can be used for up to three years without further moderation.

Ongoing moderation

Once all of the papers you are offering have been successfully pre- and post-moderated, and where you have an appropriate quality assurance and moderation structure (approved by Pam), you may choose to use your own system, and NZIM will undertake external moderation of only a sample of assessments each year.

For those providers who do not have such a system in place, or those who prefer to maintain the present system, the three-year cycle of moderations by Pam will continue.

Irrespective of which system you are using, we encourage you to contact Pam to discuss any issues or concerns you have with assessments, and we also ask that you send any new or changed assessments for moderation at any time. There will be no charge for this.

NZIM normally charges $150.00 + GST for each paper assessed. This charge will apply for any required assessments, but not where you are submitting changed assessments within the three-year period.

If you wish to use your own internal moderation processes, please complete the information sheet and send it to Pam for approval. If we do not hear from you, we will assume you wish to retain the current three-year cycle of NZIM moderations.
