NZIM Diploma in Management - Dip Mgt

Overview

The NZIM Diploma in Management constitutes an NZQA approved 120 credit Level 5 qualification.

The NZIM Diploma in Management provides a thorough grounding in business and management practice appropriate for people wishing to enter management roles in business.

The qualification is designed as an exit point from the NZ Diploma in Business for those students who wish to have a basic understanding of management practice but do not wish to specialise in business studies.  It also provides a platform for students wishing to transition to degree programmes or advanced management qualifications such as the NZIM Diploma in Management (Advanced).

While most students complete the qualification using papers from the NZ Diploma in Business (either Version 1 or Version 2), other courses of study may be approved for credit to papers with the prior approval of NZIM.  These courses of study may require NZIM moderation to ensure they are equivalent to NZ Diploma in Business papers in their scope and quality.

Providers of the programme need to be accredited to provide the New Zealand Diploma in Business or equivalent qualifications. Following is a link to the provider information about the NZIM Diploma in Management.  Providers wanting furhter information or wishing to offer the NZIM Diploma in Management should contact Diana Garrett at NZIM National on diana_garrett@nzim.co.nz.

Course description

This qualification consists of six papers from the NZ Diploma in Business or their equivalent in other qualifications. You need to pass in four compulsory business papers plus two optional papers in management areas to complete the qualification. You may register for the NZIM Diploma in Management and the NZ Diploma in Business in most polytechnics and many other private training establishments.

The NZIM Diploma in Management is an NZQA approved level 5 qualification.

Entry to the course

Students that have successfully completed the NZIM Certificate in Management, the Certificate in Small Business Management (CSBM) or the Certificate in Language, Culture and Managment (CLCM) are entitled to credit transfers into the NZDipBus and NZIM Diploma in Managament - see http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications/tertqual/dipbus/credit-tfr-nzim.html for details.  These programmes are appropriate as bridging programmes to assist students to meet the entry requirements for the NZIM Diploma in Management.

As the NZIM Diploma in Management is comprised of a selection of papers from the NZ Diploma in Business (NZDipBus), the entry requirements should meet the requirements for the NZDipBus as detailed on the NZQA website http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications/tertqual/dipbus/arp/6/66.html.  The following is taken from the NZQA website regarding entry criteria for the NZDipBus.

In general, TEOs may enrol students into the NZDipBus in accordance with the entry criteria approved by the relevant quality assurance body for the TEO under accreditation under Section 259 of the Act. The following are some further requirements for specific categories of students. Applicants less than 20 years old must have -

  • a minimum of 14 numeracy credits at level 1 or higher in Mathematics or Pāngarau on the National Qualifications Framework; and
  • fifty credits at level 2 or above with at least 12 credits in each of three subjects including a minimum of 8 literacy credits at level 2 or higher in English or Te Reo Māori; 4 credits must be in reading and 4 credits must be in writing. The literacy credits will be selected from aschedule of approved achievement standards and unit standards
or equivalent to the above. International students for whom English is a second language must also have an IELTS score of 6.0 (academic) with no individual band lower than 5.5 or a TOEFL score of 550.

NZQA have indicated that entry requriements are mandatory for version 2 of the NZDipBus qualification, but TEO's can use some discretion for applicants who are deemed, on an individual basis, to be capable of coping with the required course work but who do not meet all the entry requirements.  http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications/tertqual/dipbus/versiontwo.html

TEOs must ensure (through their discretionary entry procedures) that any NZDipBus students who enrol without the specified literacy, numeracy and other credits and (for international students) the required IELTS/TOEFL score are appropriately equipped to cope with the level of work from the beginning of their programme. This may be through demonstration of equivalent knowledge or skills, or through (for example) bridging courses and/or on-going support offered by the TEO.  TEOs should ensure that instances of discretionary entry are clearly documented so they are available for audit purposes.
