Management Focus Fund

Purpose

Management Focus is an initiative established by the Business Capability Partnership (“the Partnership”) – a consortium of private and public sector organisations. Their collective objective is to improve the capability and performance of New Zealand businesses. This national initiative is to encourage New Zealand managers to assess and develop their management capability, in recognition of the impact effective management has on the performance of an organisation.

The main target of Management Focus is those managers who want and/or need to develop their skills which enable those they manage to perform better (in such aspects as employee practices, customer service and leadership). Such managers could be those who have not thought about developing their capability, as well as those who want to improve but do not know where to go for assistance.

The Management Focus Web Site was launched in October 2007 and is designed to be the hub of the initiative. It will showcase business case studies, provide a suite of self assessment tools, publicise upcoming events under the Management Focus banner and give supporters access to special offers developed specifically and exclusively for the initiative. The resources section will feature relevant research and links to other helpful sites.

The goals underpinning the website are:
  • to inspire business owners and managers with opportunities to improve their own management practices and those of their organisation;
  • to be a place for reflection and insight, where anyone can assess their management strengths and plan their development opportunities in the context of their enterprise's business capability, development journey and priorities;
  • to provide access to self-help tools and practical tips as well as a range of resources and trusted networks and experts, so managers can be helped to make changes which generate good payback.
Management Focus therefore aims to provide a range of ideas, resources, networks and people all
aimed at assisting managers to improve their own performance which would then flow on to their
organisation.

Management Focus Themes For 2008

  1. To focus on managers' personal/individual development as leaders/managers/business owners, so that in turn, the performance of their organisation will be improved.
  2. To focus on the human factor by developing managers' enabling skills as a key theme.
  3. To optimise the use of the current capability development resources available across the public and private sectors.

Applications for this funding round must be received by NZIM National Office by 5pm, Monday 22 September 2008.
