NZIM Scholarships and Funding

Alan Crothall Trust

Early in 1982 the late Alan Crothall worked in partnership with the then, NZIM Canterbury, now, NZIM Leadership to establish a trust fund for the express purpose of financially assisting people wishing to improve their knowledge of management and leadership skills. Alan Crothall is a great success story and NZIM is proud to be associated with him, making their own donation to the Trust in the mid 1990's.

Alan's business career started with a carpet cleaning operation but after gaining a contract with the Christchurch Public Hospital in 1943 he concentrated on supplying an ever-growing range of specialist services to hospitals. The company grew rapidly, becoming a world pioneer in the field and Crothall companies were established in the UK, USA, Australia, Hong Kong and Canada. As well as this the organisation diversified into a wide range of services apart from hospital services.

Realising early in his career that good management was critical to the success of his business, Alan Crothall joined NZIM Canterbury in 1948. He became a Fellow in 1951 and Life Fellow in 1962. He was Canterbury President in 1950-51, National President from 1953-54. Today, there are four Trustees who all share Alan's passion and belief in the value of leadership education and development as being a critical factor in long-term business success.

In 2002 the Crothall family donated an additional $50,000 to the trust and today we are in a fortunate position to share the reward of good financial management with NZIM Corporate Subscribers through scholarship funding on selected courses throughout the year.

Four Quadrant Leadership Development Trust

The Four Quadrant Leadership Trust was set up in 2004 in partnership with NZIM Southern Inc and Wilfred Jarvis & Associates to bring Four Quadrant Leadership courses to not-for-profit organisations for a significantly reduced fee.

The Trust is committed to following through on the teachings of Wilf Jarvis by investing in the development of leaders. Each year the Trust offers employees of not-for-profit organisations the opportunity to take part in the two-day course which is delivered at Leadership House in Christchurch and is tailored to support those working with the complexities of the not-for-profit sector.

Some of the topics studied include: understanding human energies and applying that knowledge, defining and using empathic relationships, using Four Quadrant Leadership techniques in making decisions and taking actions, determining the successful applications of the information back at work and in personal development, studying facts and fallacies about stress.

Under the Four Quadrant Leadership Trust courses are delivered once or twice a year depending on demand and is supported by NZIM.

The Trust owns the intellectual property for the Four Quadrant Leadership course.
