80 Years is a Milestone Worthy of Celebrating
Since 1946, the New Zealand Institute of Management has stood as a cornerstone of leadership development in Aotearoa. Eight decades of guiding managers, growing capability, and lifting the standard of leadership right across the country.
None of it happened by accident.
It was built by people who believed in something bigger than themselves. Pioneers like Reg Garters, whose vision and dedication helped lay the foundations we still stand on today. Leaders like Reg gave more than their time. They gave direction, purpose, and a belief that great leadership can be taught, nurtured, and passed on.
That belief lives on in our team.
Every day, our people carry the torch forward. They mentor, teach, and challenge the next generation of New Zealand leaders. From boardrooms to emerging leaders finding their feet, our team helps turn potential into capability, and capability into real impact.
NZIM delivers research based, practical leadership training, professional development programmes, and tailored capability-building solutions for organisations of all sizes from Invercargill to Auckland.
While the world has embraced digital learning, we know something that eight decades of experience has proven time and again: there is no substitute for face-to-face leadership development. When people are in the room together, something shifts. Conversations go deeper. Trust builds faster. Leaders challenge each other, share real experiences, and leave with more than just knowledge, they leave with perspective and connection. Learning leadership by doing it, alongside others, in a shared space creates the kind of growth that sticks long after the programme ends.
80 years on, the mission hasn't changed. We're still here to develop the leaders who move this country forward and the science backs it up. Modern research in leadership psychology confirms what NZIM has known for eight decades, that intentional, structured development genuinely transforms how people lead. From neuroscience to behavioural psychology, the evidence is clear: great leaders aren't just born, they're built. Through reflection, feedback, practice, and the kind of guided growth that only comes from working with experienced facilitators.
That's why organisations across New Zealand continue to trust NZIM. Not because we've been around the longest, but because we deliver results that last. We're a proven partner in leadership development, and we're as committed to that work today as we were in 1946.
To everyone who has been part of the NZIM story, thank you. Here's to the legacy behind us and the leaders still to come.
